Music & Meditation in 2020:

Hildegard+of+Bingen.jpg

Hildegard von Bingen

May’s Music & Meditation session led us through an Ascension-tide exploration of contemplative prayer and the writings of medieval musician and physician Hildegard von Bingen.

O eternal Lord, it is pleasing to you to burn in that same fire of love, like that from which our bodies are born, and from which you begot your Son in the first dawn before all of Creation. So consider this need which falls upon us, and relieve us of it for the sake of your Son, and lead us in joyous prosperity.
— Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179)

Fanny Crosby

In June’s Music & Meditation session we responded to racial and medical conflict in our nation using the words of the hymn, “Blessed Assurance.”

Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast, there by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest. Hark! ‘tis the voice of angels, borne in a song to me, over the fields of glory, over the jasper sea. Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast, there by His love o’ershaded, sweetly my soul shall rest.
— Fanny Crosby, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus"

Julian of Norwich

July’s Music & Meditation featured a collect and prayers from Julian of Norwich, who was able to see the multi-faceted and multi-gendered ways of God.

God, of your goodness, give me yourself, for you are sufficient for me.
I cannot properly ask anything less, to be worthy of you.
If I were to ask anything less I should always be in want,
for in you alone do I have all.
Amen.
— Julian of Norwich (1343 - after 1416)

Music of Resistance.jpg

Music of Resistance

We explore the power of music as a vehicle for resistance, social justice change, and ultimately healing transformation in August.

Stir us, O Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture into wider seas, where storms show Thy mastery, where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.
— The Most Rev. Desmond Tutu
